The Atomic Theory
Return
to www.101science.com home page.
Principle 1. All elements are made up of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms. Matter is not a continuous material but rather discrete particles."
Principle 2. All atoms of a given element are identical but the atoms of one element differs from the atoms of every other element. All oxygen's are the same and all hydrogen's are the same, but oxygen's are different from hydrogen's.
Principle 3. Atoms of different elements form compounds by combining in fixed, small, whole-number ratios.
Principle 4. If the same elements form more than one compound, there is a definite but different small whole number mass ratio for each compound.
Principle 5. A chemical reaction involves a change not in the atoms themselves, but in the way the atoms are combined to form different compounds."
